File Names and Folders

File Name Characters

To ensure that your files can be used by the largest possible audience, stick to the following file name guidelines:

  • Use a maximum of 31 characters
  • Don't use spaces! Use underscores (_)
  • Don't use characters like \ / * : < > ? | "
  • Use only lower case letters.

Organize your Site with Folders

When setting up a large site, use folders for different sections to make website maintenance easy. Next time you go to edit a file, you won't waste time searching through all your page and image files to find the one you want. Plus, good directory and file naming indicates the relevance of those words when the search engines spider your site.
