The File Manager within your Control Panel can handle many of the functions that an FTP client does, all from within your browser. Functions such as setting permissions, uploading files from your hard drive, creating and editing html files, or creating directories can all be handled by the File Manager. The File Manager also allows you to view all of the files within your directories.
If you want to open a file, you need to click on its icon. If you wish to see its status, click on its name.
Navigating File Manager

If you are editing a file already located in the directory you are uploading to and wish for it to be replaced, click the “overwrite existing files” box. This is useful if you are updating html files or images.
You cannot upload a file larger than the allotted space for your account. In this case – the amount is 244.31 MB. You must have 5 MB free on your account after an upload.
File manager, by default, displays hidden files. Hidden files are those that begin with a period, such as .cpanel.

After clicking on delete, you will not be asked if you wish to delete the file – it will immediately move it to the trash can. You still have the option of restoring any files located in the trash can by clicking on it, but remember, you must click on the icon and not the file name. Clicking on the file name brings up the list of options in the upper right hand corner. If you wish to permanently remove it, click on the trash can.
Renaming Files and Directories
After selecting the name of the file you want to rename, the menu used to manage your files will appear in the upper right hand corner. Click on “Rename this ***.” The following box appears.

*BE SURE TO WRITE IN THE EXTENSION OF THE FILE*
For example, if it is a gif file and you wanted to rename it, add .gif to the end of the name. If it is a jpg, write .jpg. When you are ready, hit rename and your file will be changed to your specifications.
Changing File and Directory Permissions
Permissions can be set for your directories and files. These permissions determine who can view, write to, and use the directories and files on your site.
The permission settings are comprised of three numerical values determined by the amount and type of privileges assigned to each category.
Read = 4, Write = 2, and Execute = 1. In this example, users have been given read(4), write(2) and execute(1) permissions totaling up to 7.

Notice that the permissions are broken up into three categories: user, group, and world. The user, or “owner,” should have full access so it is important to have all three categories selected. This gives you full access to any of the files. Having write access is essential to allowing you or others to update your site by editing the files.
The other settings, group and world, depend on how much access you wish to give others. Usually read and execute writes are given to group and world users while write access is denied. This gives people the ability to view the files and even download them, but not to edit or change them. However, if you want certain files to remain hidden from people visiting your site, you can disable the read and, depending on the file or directory, the execute permissions.
When all settings are where you want them to be, click “change” to finalize your options.
