FTP Session Control

FTP manager is a dashboard within cPanel that allows you to manage your FTP configurations. When you first open up FTP manager, you will come across four areas designed to make FTP management easy and painless. The four sections are FTP accounts, Setup anonymous FTP, Anonymous FTP message, and FTP session control.

After clicking on FTP Accounts, the manager will appear with any users you have created and its status as to whether it’s a main account or not as well as whether or not they have hit a quota specified at the time of creating the account. If you wish to add another FTP account, click the “Add FTP Account” button to create a user account that gives access to particular sections of your website.

Under the Add FTP Account page, you will come across various fields that allow you to add an FTP account.

The various fields are login, password, quota, and directory.

Login: The username the individual will use to access the directory. Password: A password for the account.
Quota: Set a quota for the amount of space this directory is allowed to use in megs. If set to 0, unlimited transfer will be allowed.
Directory: By default, a directory named after the user will be created, but this can be changed to anything in your www (public_html) folder. If a / is left in the directory field, the user will have access to the entire www folder.

*Note: Any new users will have read/write access to the directory you choose. Be careful of who you give FTP access to since any files can be added, edited, or deleted in the directory.

Setup Anonymous FTP Access

Anonymous FTP will allow people to download files stored in the public_ftp folder by using the following details:

ftp server: ftp.yourdomain.com
username: anonymous@yourdomain.com
password: anonymous

The default settings in this control panel allow users to access the FTP server and download files, but not upload files. If you want users to be able to upload files, check the box that states “allow anonymous uploads to…” Users will then be able to upload and download files through an FTP client. Click “save settings” when you are done.

Any files transferred using anonymous FTP will be stored in the public_ftp folder. WARNINGS:

Security

Anonymous FTP will grant any and all users the ability to access your "upload" directory, or any directory on your domain that has been set for "public" read/write permissions. This gives anonymous users access to upload or download files to and from your domain. You must set the appropriate permissions for your directories to restrict anonymous FTP access. You can inhibit access to specific files and directories using the File Manager by disabling public read and/or write access to the files or folders you don't want people to see.

Responsibility

As the account owner, you are responsible for any and all files that are stored on your domain. This includes files that are uploaded by anonymous FTP users. With the use of anonymous FTP, your site is susceptible to becoming a "warez" site. Typically, these are sites that are used by "hackers" to trade (upload/download) illegally pirated copies of software programs with one another. As the account owner, the complete content of your domain is your responsibility. If your site becomes a trading post for "warez" programs, you may face legal action that can be taken against you by the programmers/software companies of the copyrighted software, in addition to your account being deleted from our servers. Please refer to our policies for more information.

Data Transfer

Any and all FTP transfers, including anonymous FTP, will be used in the calculation of the total data transfer for your account. If this total data transfer amount exceeds the limit that is set for your plan, you will be responsibility for any and all overage charges that occur. Please Note: There will be NO exceptions made for these overage charges. Once anonymous FTP has been enabled, it will be your responsibility to monitor the activity for your account. All anonymous FTP activity is stored within the "ftp_log" file. This file contains entries for each and every anonymous FTP upload/download session. This file is located in the FTP manager page at the very bottom. Three links are provided and contain the FTP access logs.

Disk Space

If you are going to allow people to upload files to your site, make sure you keep track of your disk space. Do not allow your disk space usage to get too close to your maximum disk space allowance or you may experience problems accessing your site. You can limit the amount of transfer in the quota field. Anonymous FTP Message

Allows you to enter a message visitors will see when they connect to your anonymous FTP server.

FTP Session Control

This utility allows you to manage individuals who have connected to your website using an FTP client. You have the power to disconnect or time out FTP sessions through this manager.
