Password Protect Directories

cPanel allows users to password protect directories with sensitive material. When developing a password for a specific directory, be sure to include letters, numbers, AND symbols to make cracking your folders more difficult for potential hackers. A password of just numbers or letters is easier to gain access to than a password with a mixture of the two.

To set up a password for a particular directory, follow these instructions:

1. Click on the folder you wish to password protect

2. This menu will appear – click on the box next to the lock to require a password for access via the web.

3. Leave the protected resource name.

4. You can add user names and passwords to give out to employees who need access to particular information in the folder. This helps you trace who access these files and when. If you give out one username and password to multiple people, you run the risk of not being able to trace who performs what actions on your website.

5. Type in the username and password. When you are done, click “add/modify authorized user.”

6. Save your settings by clicking “save” at the top of the box.
